Southern Amateur Athletic Union (SAAU)
What is SAAU?
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sports. AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the olympic games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU has focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages at the grass roots level in various Districts across the nation. The philosophy of "Sports for ALL, Forever," is shared by 750,000 participants. Louisiana & Mississippi comprise the Southern AAU District. AAU Membership Benefits & Details
2024 AAU memberships opened for registration September 1, 2023 and continue through August 31, 2024. Just a reminder to obtain your AAU membership as early as possible as background checks for adults (not athletes) require a few days to process. AAU now offers one or multi year membership(s) for your convenience. The AAU Compliance Department will assist you in any way they can, and of course the District Office is here to assist you as well. The AAU has addressed many of the inherent risks while playing sports through a comprehensive insurance program that is second to none in the youth sport industry. The AAU’s insurance program is a benefit of membership and extends to those who are members of the AAU (athletes, non-athletes, club) or affiliated with the AAU through its members. Everyone participating must have an AAU Athlete or Non Athlete Membership. The AAU insurance program is comprehensive in nature and provides protection for athletes while participating in competitions and practices, coaches while instructing, event operators while conducting licensed events, spectators while attending events, and facilities while partnering with AAU members
